LOS ANGELES – Cal State L.A.'s women's basketball team enjoyed its return to the Eagles Nest Friday night.
The Golden Eagles stormed to a 41-23 halftime lead and went on to defeat Cal State Stanislaus, 84-56, Friday night in a California Collegiate Athletic Association contest at the Eagles Nest. Cal State L.A. (6-9, 3-6 CCAA) won for the second time in three games while handing the Warriors (4-11, 2-7 CCAA) their fifth straight setback.
Shristy Kumar had a game-high 24 points and nine rebounds for Cal State Stanislaus. Katie Busi had 15 points and six rebounds.
Cal State L.A. shot 50 percent for the game and enjoyed a 45-35 rebounding advantage. The Golden Eagles also shot well from the free-throw line, making 17 of their 20 attempts.
Cal State Stanislaus shot 31.3 percent for the contest and made 11-of-15 from the free-throw line.
The Golden Eagles trailed early and Cal State Stanislaus enjoyed a 7-4 advantage four minutes into the game. The Warriors led for the last time at 11-9 and the game was tied at 17-17 before a 3-pointer by Williams gave the Golden Eagles the lead for good. The 3-pointer started a 14-2 run that put the Golden Eagles ahead, 31-19 and was culminated by a three-point play by Oda.
Cal State L.A. also finished the first half with a flurry and took an 18-point halftime edge, 41-23, after a jumper by Whittington.
The Golden Eagles started the second half with a 9-2 run that gave them a 50-25 lead with 15:55 remaining after a free throw by
Ashley Kitchen. The Golden Eagles built their biggest lead at 73-41 with 7:54 to go after a basket by
Rachel Ottovich.
Cal State L.A. then led by at least 26 points the rest of the way.
Yasmeen Herrera had four points and a game-high 12 rebounds for the Golden Eagles.
Cal State L.A. will return to action on Saturday night with a home game against Chico State.
